As winter approaches, we want to make sure that all our players, are ready to train and play safely and effectively despite the cold. Here are some important tips and guidelines to help players stay warm and focused on the field without compromising performance.
1. Dress in Layers – But Keep it Light
For training sessions, it’s essential that players avoid heavy jackets or bulky coats. While it might seem warm at first, large outerwear can restrict movement, increase overheating, and disrupt focus. Instead, we recommend wearing lightweight, layered clothing, which allows players to adjust as they warm up.
Suggested layers for training:
- A thermal or base layer (long-sleeved top and leggings).
- A moisture-wicking training shirt.
- A thin, fitted sweatshirt or training jacket (something easy to remove).
2. Bring a Warm Jacket for the Sideline
While large coats aren’t suitable for training, they are important for keeping warm when players are not on the field. For games, players on the bench should wear a warm, insulated jacket that can be easily removed when it’s their turn to play. This helps maintain body temperature and prevents muscles from getting too cold between shifts.
3. Hats, Gloves, and Socks
Cold extremities can be uncomfortable and distracting. We recommend wearing:
- Gloves: Thin but warm gloves are perfect for training. Avoid oversized gloves that may feel heavy or awkward.
- Hats or Headbands: A light, snug-fitting hat or headband is ideal, covering the ears without obstructing vision.
- Thick socks or thermal socks: To keep feet warm, make sure socks are thick enough to retain warmth without affecting boot fit.
4. Pack Extra Gear
Weather can change quickly in winter, so it’s a good idea to pack a few extra items:
- Extra socks and gloves in case the first pair gets wet.
- A spare base layer to switch into after training or if it’s especially cold.
5. Stay Hydrated
Cold weather can sometimes trick players into forgetting to hydrate. Make sure to bring a water bottle to every session or game. Staying hydrated is crucial for performance, even in winter.
Winter conditions can be a challenge, but with the right gear and preparation, we can keep our players comfortable, safe, and focused on developing their skills. Let’s enjoy the season and make the most of our training!
